Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Anxiety is a feeling of nervousness, unease, or worry that typically occurs in the absence of an imminent threat. Anxiety can be debilitating and interfere with someone’s quality of life. Anxiety differs from fear, which is the body’s natural response to immediate danger, the fight or flight response.  Anxiety and Panic Attacks can be exhibited by hot flashes, accelerated heart rate and shortness of breath, racing thoughts, feeling overwhelmed, nausea and vomiting. 

Depression

Depression may manifest as feelings of sadness, tearfulness, and hopelessness. During periods of depression someone might experience decreased interest in pleasurable experiences, feelings of hopelessness, feeling of worthlessness, or suicidal thoughts. 

Depression symptoms in children and teens

In young children and teens, symptoms may be seen in an atypical way which could include, behavior issues, irritability, feeling negative and worthless, anger, poor performance or poor attendance at school, feeling misunderstood and extremely sensitive, They may also manifest by using recreational drugs or alcohol, eating or sleeping too much, self-harm, loss of interest in normal activities, and avoidance of social interactions.

Bipolar Disorder 

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by extreme mood swings. The two mood extremes of bipolar disorder are mania and depression. Depression is exhibited by frequent sadness, hopelessness, poor energy and apathy. Mania is indicated by being over talkative, grandiose thoughts, and the decreased need for sleep. Mania can also be exhibited by being engaged in high-risk behavior or poor impulse control like over spending and driving too fast. Manic episodes include an intense “high,” an overly happy or outgoing mood accompanied by behavioral changes. 

OCD

People with OCD experience intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or impulses that continue even without triggers. These thoughts, images, or impulses are referred to as obsessions. In addition, OCD involves repeated behaviors or routines referred to as compulsions or rituals, which are performed to try to reduce the anxiety associated with obsessive thoughts. OCD may be exhibited by OCD symptoms, such as checking, counting, or hand washing. 

PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an emotional and psychological reaction to trauma. People develop PTSD after experiencing a shocking or frightening event, such as a natural disaster, a car accident, military service, or sexual assault. People with PTSD often seem jumpy and anxious, haunted by recurring memories called “flashbacks.” 

PTSD symptoms often co-exist with other conditions such as substance use disorders, depression and anxiety.

Personality Disorders

Personality Disorders can be very problematic, but may be treated successfully with a combination of therapy and medications. People with Personality Disorders have unstable moods and can act recklessly. They also have a hard time managing their emotions. A person with a Personality Disorder may have trouble keeping jobs and relationships. It’s important to get treatment because you are at higher risk for suicide. You are also at higher risk for depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and self-harm. 

Some types of Personality Disorders are Antisocial Personality, Histrionic Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and Dependent Personality Disorder. 

Child and Adolescent ADD and ADHD

Symptoms commonly include restlessness, absent mindedness, poor organizational skills, lack of interest or focus, and impulsive actions. A child with ADHD may be unable to sit still during class, particularly if the subject is one they aren’t interested in learning. They may be fidgety, tap their feet on the floor, or make excessive noise in places where everyone else is quiet. ADHD may be accompanied with other symptoms like anger, anxiety, and depression that may be related to school work.
